Art magazines in New York, and the critics who write for them
Two hundred art magazines, critics, newsletters and podcasts covering New York art and still publishing: who writes what, where, and where to read them.
This is the press that covers New York art as of 7 October 2026: the art magazines, newspapers, newsletters and podcasts, and the critics and writers who review New York shows for them. For a gallery or an artist, these are the outlets and writers a show can be reviewed by. For a reader, they are where to find out what is worth seeing.
The list began as research on 1,021 writers and publications. Of those, 842 had a dated piece from April 2026 on, and the 200 most relevant are below. Relevance is how much of a writer’s or publication’s work is about New York art, how central the outlet is to art writing, and how recently it published. Publications come first, then writers in alphabetical order, and no outlet has more than six writers here.
Each line gives a beat in a few words. Writers link to their own author page and publications to their site. No email addresses or phone numbers are given. Roles and beats change, so if one is out of date, tell us through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Who are the main art critics in New York?
The list includes the critics at the main titles: Holland Cotter and Jason Farago at The New York Times, Jerry Saltz at New York magazine, Lance Esplund and Karen Wilkin at The Wall Street Journal, and Jed Perl at The New York Review of Books. Writers at Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Cultured, the Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic are listed too.
Who are the art critics at The New Yorker?
The New Yorker covers New York art in its Goings On listings and reviews. Rhoda Feng and Zoë Hopkins write short reviews of New York gallery shows, Vince Aletti writes on photography, and Hilton Als writes art criticism among other subjects.
What are the main art magazines in New York?
Among the New York-based magazines and sites here are Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Cultured, BOMB, the Brooklyn Rail, e-flux, Hyperallergic and Whitehot. Apollo, ArtReview and Flash Art, based in London and Milan, also cover New York shows.
Where are New York gallery shows reviewed?
In the Brooklyn Rail’s ArtSeen reviews, in Artforum’s reviews, in Cultured’s Critics’ Table, in the monthly Gallery Chronicle in The New Criterion, in The New York Times’ monthly roundup Art Gallery Shows to See, and in The New Yorker’s Goings On listings. Vide picks the month’s shows, and Art Observed lists galleries, fairs and museums.
How was this list made?
It began as a research list compiled on 7 October 2026, with the links behind each entry. Each writer or publication here has a dated piece from April 2026 on. Each was scored for how much of its work is about New York art, how central it is to art writing and how recently it published, and the top 200 were kept. The method is at the foot of the page.
Is a writer or publication missing?
The list is a snapshot from 7 October 2026. To suggest a writer or publication, or to report a change, use the contact page.
The galleries and shows these writers review are on On View. To start with New York’s galleries and what is on this month, see the best art galleries in New York City and the best gallery shows in New York City this October. Every gallery and museum on the map is in the New York listings.
How we counted
The research gathered 1,021 entries: 731 writers and 290 publications, newsletters, podcasts and channels. They came from newspapers and magazines, art magazines and sites, market press, local and community press, lifestyle and broadcast press, independent newsletters, guides and listings, and freelance critics.
Of the 1,021, 842 had a dated piece from April 2026 on. Each was scored out of 11. Location: 3 for being based in New York or its area, 2 for covering New York, and nothing where the research could not say. Subject: 3 for a beat about art, its galleries, museums or exhibitions, or the art market, and 1 otherwise. Standing: 3 for the top art trade press, 2 for other art trade, national, market and listings outlets, and 1 for local, community, lifestyle, broadcast, newsletter and freelance outlets. Recency: 1 for a piece since July 2026. Role: 1 for a critic, editor, columnist or correspondent. Ties went to those based in New York, then to the most recent.
A few entries were set by hand where the score missed the beat: a citywide arts paper and an arts-and-culture desk were moved up, Jerry Saltz was moved up because his outlet’s standing undersells him, and writers and outlets whose New York art is occasional, or whose beat is not art, were left out. No outlet has more than six writers here.
The names, roles and beats are as the research found them on 7 October 2026, from the pages each entry links to. Some of those sites refuse automated checks, so for several entries the research relied on feeds, archives and mastheads. Roles change quickly. This is a list of relevance, not a ranking of quality, and not an endorsement.
Published ; the text was last revised on . The names, roles and beats are as the research found them on that day, from the pages each entry links to.
