What we keep, and why

On View is a map of galleries and museums and what is on at them. It works without an account, and keeps as little as it can.

Visiting the site

The site counts its visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics and Plausible. Both work without cookies and without anything that follows you from site to site: they record which pages were read, from which country and which kind of browser, and no more. Netlify, which hosts the site, keeps the usual server logs for a short time.

Outside Europe, a Google Ads tag notes whether a visit came from one of our ads, and whether it ended in a subscription to the weekly email. It sets cookies to do so. In the European Economic Area, Britain and Switzerland it is told that nobody has consented, and keeps nothing.

Most pictures of the shows are copies we keep ourselves. Where a copy is missing, the picture loads from the gallery’s own site, which then sees a request from your browser, without the page it came from.

An account

You can log in with Google, or with an email address and a password, to follow galleries, save shows and mark the ones you have been to. Logging in is handled by Supabase, which keeps your address, a hashed form of your password (never the password itself) and, for Google, the name and address Google gives it. We keep what you have marked, by your account’s id, in Netlify’s storage. Nothing about an account is shared with anyone, and nothing is sent to you but the emails you ask for: to confirm your address, or to reset your password.

Being logged in is remembered in your browser. Logging out forgets it. Your settings page can change your address or your password, and delete the account, with everything it held, at once.

The weekly email

Subscribing keeps your address on the list for each city you choose, with the date and the city you were looking at. It is used for that email alone. Every issue will carry a way to unsubscribe; until then, write to us and we take you off at once.

Writing to us

A message from the contact page, or an email, is read by us and kept as long as it is useful to answer it. The contact page’s messages pass through Netlify Forms, which filters out spam.

Who we are

On View is run from San Francisco (the about page says what it is for). For anything about your data, to see what we hold or to have it deleted, write to hello@onview.so. We answer every message.
