Raven ChaconNew Work
A seven-channel video work pairing found 1950s–60s travel footage with Chacon’s electronic score, shown alongside drawings of Earth and Mars canyons.
In The Naming of Names, a seven-channel video installation, Chacon layers silent 1950s and ’60s travel footage from the Prelinger Archives with his own field recordings and electronic music, recasting Navajo Nation’s deserts and canyons as otherworldly terrain that unsettles the colonial gaze behind the original images.
Nearby, topographical drawings overlay Canyon de Chelly with Mars’s Valles Marineris, linking canyons on two worlds. It is Chacon’s first West Coast solo exhibition, opening during the United States’ Semiquincentennial.
