A room-filling installation of nearly 75,000 hand-built bamboo and Japanese paper kites suspended as a cloud canopy.
Hashimoto builds his installations from thousands of handmade kites of bamboo and Japanese paper, hung together so they seem to drift through the air. Some are blank or solid-colored; others carry layered collaged-paper graphics.
For SFMOMA he makes the largest work of his career, a canopy of nearly 75,000 elements covering the Roberts Family Gallery from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. The gallery is free to enter.
