The Studio Museum in Harlem

Sep 30, 2026 – Jan 3, 2027

Drawings, paintings, photographs and sculpture by nineteen artists who build images through black-and-white tonal gradation rather than line.

Drawn from the museum’s collection, the show gathers drawings, paintings, photographs and sculpture by nineteen artists, among them Roy DeCarava, Gordon Parks, Ming Smith, Lorna Simpson, Glenn Ligon, Kerry James Marshall and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

What links them is a reliance on the scale of grays between black and white, rather than line, to give an image its form and rhythm, a principle the show traces back to the earliest surviving photograph, Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Window Le Gras (1826–27). It is organized by Jayson Overby Jr.
