Geometries

Julie Mehretu, Jack Whitten, Alma Thomas and others

The Studio Museum in Harlem

Sep 10, 2026 – Feb 7, 2027

Works from the museum’s collection by thirty artists who build abstract and figurative images from lines, shapes and grids.

Organized by Thelma Golden and Simon Ghebreyesus, the show treats geometry as a shared visual language, drawing on Western abstraction, African textile and design traditions, and everyday patterns like city grids and flowerheads. Works range from rigorous geometric abstraction to figuration built from basic shapes, as artists work through questions of perception, identity and representation.

Among the thirty artists are Norman Lewis, Al Loving, Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Julie Mehretu, Stanley Whitney, McArthur Binion and Torkwase Dyson.
