Dreams of This Future: The Collection of Peggy Cooper Cafritz

Kerry James Marshall, Simone Leigh, Wangechi Mutu and others

The Studio Museum in Harlem

Aug 19, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027

Paintings, photographs, sculptures, textiles and works on paper by artists of African descent, drawn from Peggy Cooper Cafritz’s bequeathed collection.

Peggy Cooper Cafritz (1947–2018), a patron, educator and civil rights activist, left most of her art to the Studio Museum and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, which she cofounded. The first show about her as a collector draws on her gift of more than four hundred works by over two hundred artists.

She built two collections, the first largely destroyed by fire in 2009, and backed artists of African descent early in their careers. Artists include Kerry James Marshall, Simone Leigh, Wangechi Mutu, Deana Lawson and Nick Cave.
