Make Room

Sep 12 – Oct 10, 2026 Hollywood

Closed

New paintings by Xingzi Gu of people caught in a state of waiting: teenagers near adulthood, hesitant couples, figures sitting alone.

Teenagers on the edge of adulthood, pairs unsure whether closeness is arriving or fading, and people alone with feelings they cannot name fill these canvases; the show borrows its mood from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.

The paintings, all from 2026, are built from thin layers of acrylic, some with oil, and can take Gu more than a year each, so shifts in a face or a surface stay on record; Gu calls the canvas a “recording machine.” Gu was born in Nantong, China, in 1995 and lives in Brooklyn.
