Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity
More than 70 ensembles from Shanghai, Hong Kong and America trace a century of Chinese women’s dress, from late Qing robes to the 1960s cheongsam.
The garments run from loose embroidered robes of the late Qing dynasty through the close-fitting qipao of the 1930s to the cheongsam of the 1960s, in bright silks with fine trims. They stand on mannequins customized by the fashion designer Jason Wu, and together show how Chinese and Chinese American women used dress to express identity and meet a changing world.
