Huguette CalandA Life in a Few Lines

Hammer Museum

Sep 27, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027 Westwood

A retrospective of Huguette Caland, the Lebanese-born artist who spent her last decades in Venice, California, in about 150 works.

About 150 drawings, paintings, sculptures and textiles, among them thread-on-fabric dresses shown on painted wooden mannequins, are joined by archival material and ephemera. The work is sensual and often funny, taking up language, gender, aging and the body.

Caland (1931–2019) worked in Venice, California, for her last decades, and her place in the Hammer’s Made in L.A. 2016 brought her a wider audience. The show comes from the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid, and is curated by Hannah Feldman.
