Andrea HigginsSelf-Portraits
New diptych paintings of woven-looking scars and floral blouse patterns, abstracted from fabric swatches.
Higgins makes abstract portraits by painting fabric swatches in such detail that the patterns look woven. Her new works are diptychs: one panel recalls skin pulled together by stitches after surgery, the other a favorite blouse, in the kind of floral print she wore through her illness and recovery from cancer.
The gallery calls the series her most personal yet, bound up with her own scars and mortality. Higgins, who lives in San Francisco, has been represented by Hosfelt since 2000.
