Günther UeckerVerletztes Feld
Sep 30 – Oct 31, 2026
Uecker’s 1981 nail painting Verletztes Feld (Wounded Field), split open with an axe, with 22 painted photographs of its making.
The painting is a dense bed of nails driven into a canvas that Uecker (1930–2025) painted white with his bare hands, then split down the middle with an axe, the earliest known use of that gesture in his work. As light moves across it, the nails cast shifting shadows, so the piece also records the passing of time.
With it are 22 photographs by the Swiss photographer Rolf Schröter, who documented the painting’s making in Uecker’s studio. Uecker painted over or perforated each print, so every one is unique.
