Irving PennL’Essence du portrait

Thaddaeus Ropac, Marais

Nov 7, 2026 – Jan 30, 2027

Opening soon

Photographic portraits by Irving Penn of twentieth-century artists, from an early Marcel Duchamp to a late Elizabeth Peyton.

A survey of Penn’s portraiture across his career, from an early, stark picture of Marcel Duchamp to a photograph of Elizabeth Peyton taken in his final decade. Sitters include John Cage bent over a piano, a 79-year-old Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso, whom Penn photographed in a tightly cropped, single-eyed close-up after being granted only ten minutes at his home in Cannes.

It runs alongside two other Penn shows in Paris this season, at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and the Bourse de Commerce–Pinault Collection.
