Fri, Nov 6Inaugural lecture by the curators, 12:30 pm

The career of the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and the making of the Statue of Liberty, from the first idea to its 1886 unveiling in New York.

Organized with the Musée Bartholdi in Colmar, the show follows the Alsatian sculptor from his early monumental projects to the statue that the jurist Édouard Laboulaye proposed as a French gift to the United States. It covers the fundraising campaign on both sides of the Atlantic, the full-size pieces shown at the 1876 and 1878 world’s fairs, and the engineering of Viollet-le-Duc and then Gustave Eiffel.

Curated by François Blanchetière and Juliette Chevée.
