Shaped, sculptural canvases in faceted geometric forms and bright color, made by Hinman between 2000 and 2014.

The first exhibition devoted solely to Hinman’s Gems series, begun in his Bowery loft in 2000 and finished in 2014, not long before his death this past May. Angular planes and faceted shapes project from the wall in saturated color, carrying forward the shaped-canvas language Hinman pioneered in the 1960s into a late, distilled form.

The Butler Institute of American Art first showed the series in 2011, while it was still underway; this is its first full presentation, following Hinman’s last lifetime show at the gallery earlier in 2026.
