The Artist as Practitioner: Offerings to the Nagas

Matteo Callegari, Peter Makela and Michela Martello

Tappeto Volante Projects

Sep 12 – Oct 4, 2026 Tribeca

Closed

Paintings and objects by three Nyingma Buddhist practitioners centered on the naga, a serpent spirit guarding water and earth.

Matteo Callegari, Peter Makela and Michela Martello all practice within the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and treat their work as offerings to the nagas, serpent spirits said to guard the earth and waters and respond to how people treat them. They arrived independently at the serpent as a recurring figure of poison and remedy, destruction and renewal.

Callegari organized the show himself, merging artist and curator, as the gallery opens its new season in a Gowanus space shared with Field of Play’s parallel two-person exhibition.
