Esphyr SlobodkinaAn Unbound Creativity
Oct 7 – Nov 14, 2026 Upper East Side
Hard-edge abstract paintings and works on paper by a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group, spanning seven decades.
Paintings and works on paper by Esphyr Slobodkina, who helped found the American Abstract Artists group in 1936 and became an early practitioner of hard-edge abstraction, arranging flat geometric shapes into balanced, colorful compositions. Works on view range from a 1929 piece to abstractions from the 1990s, among them Triangle in an Oval and FMS Abstraction.
The show follows a recent museum pairing of Slobodkina with Louise Nevelson and a solo presentation of her work at the Independent 20th Century fair this past September. Slobodkina, also known for illustrating the children’s book Caps for Sale, kept making art until shortly before her death in 2002.
