Debra Cartwright and Kellie Romany

McBride / Dillman

Sep 11 – Nov 1, 2026 Chinatown

New abstract paintings by Debra Cartwright and Kellie Romany on landscape, color, the body and historical memory.

Cartwright builds paintings on compositions from Robert S. Duncanson’s nineteenth-century landscapes, recolored with the palette of Richard Mayhew. Into them she places fragmented Black female bodies taken from nineteenth-century medical illustrations, joining landscape and body as sites of exploitation and survival.

Romany sets aside the brush, tilting and moving her surfaces so that gravity, viscosity and time shape the paint. Bleeds, rings and fissures form cell-like structures in a palette of skin tones, suggesting bodies moving through systems and landscapes.
