Katinka HuangStage Fright
New paintings of female figures doubled, distorted and watched, staged like scenes from a private cinema.
Born in Shanghai and raised between China and the UK before settling in New York, Huang paints women who rarely appear alone, even when doubling what seems to be a single person: bodies multiply, stretch out of proportion or shrink into smaller echoes of themselves, while a face recurs on a television screen.
One figure often faces another who might be an alter ego, a memory or a projection, as Huang treats identity as a shifting cast of characters rather than a fixed self. The paintings have the logic of dreams or a theater set, conjuring melodramatic, uncanny scenes of a self endlessly reinvented and scrutinized.
