New paintings and sculptures built up by mathematical rules, in the Los Angeles twins’ fourth solo show with the gallery.
Nikolai and Simon Haas begin the new Accretion paintings with simple, nostalgic landscapes, then build up thickened paint according to a reaction-diffusion equation, the math behind spots and stripes on animal fur, until the scenes dissolve. Their Beasts, portraits of friends and family, return in bronze with fur-like surfaces.
The largest work, The Peach Tree, has a bronze trunk on a carved stone base, leaves of Venetian glass beads strung by the Haas Sisters, a group of women in Lost Hills, California, and glowing blown-glass peaches.
