Michaela Yearwood-DanA Woman of Will
New paintings arranged as a cathedral-like sanctuary, with thirteen small apostle panels, large abstractions and ceramic-tiled benches.
Yearwood-Dan draws on her Catholic convent schooling in London to reimagine church aesthetics through a feminist and queer lens. Thirteen small paintings, one for each apostle including Mary Magdalene, hang in the front room like a side chapel, while large gestural abstractions in cobalt, gold and maroon recall stained glass. Beads, ribbon, ceramic petals, gold leaf and lyrics from pop singers and poets are worked into the surfaces.
Ceramic vases and tiled benches made with Theodore Vass fill the space. It is her third solo show with the gallery and coincides with her UK institutional show The Practice of Liberation.
