Dora JeridiA Burnt Child Loves the Fire
Large new paintings of Parisian interiors swamped by drapery and spreading black, in Jeridi’s first solo show with the gallery.
The French-born painter, now based in New York, stages rooms loosely remembered from her grandmother’s home in Paris, with leather sofas, wooden dining sets and framed portraits, then floods them with purple, gold and red drapery, cross-hatching and oily black that hides whatever story is unfolding.
The fabric draws on her study of vintage Dior garments from the Galliano years in the house’s archive; quotations such as the screaming horse from Picasso’s Guernica surface too. The title is Oscar Wilde’s reversal of a medieval proverb.
