Hiroshi SugimotoUnnatural Habitat
Sep 15 – Oct 24, 2026 Chelsea
Sugimoto’s photographs of natural history museum dioramas, from his first in 1975 to new ones made last year, with new washi paper screens.
Sugimoto began the Diorama series at the American Museum of Natural History in 1975, two years after moving to New York, and went back to the museum in 2025 to make new pictures. Lions, condors, jaguars, Homo erectus and landscapes such as the Rocky Mountains appear, along with Polar Bear (1975), his first image as an artist.
Rediscovered negatives printed large for the first time and folding byōbu screens in washi paper complete his third solo show at Lisson.
