Yu HongField of Asura
New large paintings, some built like European altarpieces, of figures caught up in turbulent, apocalyptic scenes, in Yu Hong’s first show at Lisson New York.
Multi-panel works modeled on classical altarpieces anchor the show, with medium and small paintings alongside. Yu Hong draws on both classical European painting and Buddhist imagery to paint bodies under strain and dependent on one another.
The title work, an arched triptych, shows a tower of figures carried up or swallowed by clouds; its name refers to the realm of endless war among demigods in Buddhist and Hindu lore.
