Thu, Oct 29Opening reception with the artist, 6–8 pm
Twelve new paintings and ten works on paper by Lari Pittman, densely layered with signs, text and pop-culture imagery.
The new works continue Pittman’s dense, decorative style, mixing city views and street signs with textile patterns, storybook and dream imagery, and words in several languages addressed to the viewer.
Born in Los Angeles in 1952, Pittman spent much of his childhood in Colombia, his mother’s home country. His embrace of craft and ornament grew partly from his years at CalArts in the 1970s, where a feminist art program challenged the low standing of the decorative arts.
