Volker HüllerAngelus Novus

Grimm

Sep 9 – Oct 31, 2026 Tribeca

New figurative paintings, from large canvases to small works in silk and oil, set among toppled statues and Roman columns.

Hüller’s third solo show at the New York gallery is his first devoted entirely to figuration. Large oil canvases hang with small paintings in silk and oil that share recurring motifs: a toppled stone torso watched by onlookers, a merman washed up on a beach, pilgrims sprawled before an altar, often among Roman columns and arches.

The title comes from Paul Klee’s painting, read through Walter Benjamin’s “angel of history.” Hüller was born in Forchheim, Germany, in 1976 and lives in Brooklyn.
