Gareth CadwalladerGoodnight Moon
Nine small watercolors on fatherhood, birth and death, moving between a son’s and a father’s identity.
Cadwallader shows nine small watercolors in a long, narrow format recalling Japanese handscrolls, moving from death to birth: a dying man borne up in a cloud of scattered ashes, a pregnant body lying in winter earth like a fossil, a baby at the breast in a nest under a stippled night sky.
In the central painting, named after Margaret Wise Brown’s 1947 bedtime book, an exhausted father lies stretched on the floor beside a cot; in another, tiny hands crowd over him as he sleeps.
