Sat, Nov 14Opening reception, 6–8 pm

A three-channel video on Burmese pythons in the Everglades, with sculpture and a window installation, on motherhood and invasive species control.

The centerpiece is Chapter 1 of Nissim’s new three-channel video, with original music by Topu Lyo. It draws on interviews with biologists, reptile hobbyists and animal welfare scientists, set beside ancient narratives and field research, to ask which lives are protected and which eliminated. Nissim made it while pregnant, nursing and weaning.

The project began during her AIRIE residencies in the Everglades and reads the python alongside the serpent of Genesis. A new window installation, Destruction and Creation, carries the themes of death, reproduction, care and violence onto the gallery exterior. Presented with The Neighborhood: An Urban Center for Jewish Life.
