Yvonne JacquetteFrom the Air

Karma’s first solo show of Yvonne Jacquette (1934–2023): paintings and works on paper from 1971 to 2016 of cities, clouds and fields seen from the air.

Early watercolors look out through the oval of a passenger window; later pastels and oils drop the frame, tilting mills, highways and city blocks up toward the viewer in broken, dotted color. Jacquette chartered planes over Maine, flew by helicopter above Manhattan at night and drew from high in the World Trade Center, working the sketches up later from memory.

Also shown is a newly found maquette for a second volume of Aerial, the journal she made with Edwin Denby in 1981; Karma Books has published it in facsimile.
