Sigils: Unveiling the Sacred in the MOLAA Permanent Collection
Ana Mendieta, Wifredo Lam, Leonora Carrington, Vik Muniz and others
From Oct 4, 2026 Long Beach
Works from the museum’s permanent collection by over forty artists, on spiritual traditions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Marking the museum’s 30th anniversary, the show gathers collection works that engage Christianity, Judaism, Santería and occult mysticism. Artists approach belief with devotion, doubt or social and political critique, often through the body, nature, iconography, ritual and the afterlife.
The works are framed as sigils, magical emblems that evoke the sacred. It is co-curated by IMLS fellows Kendall da Silva, Jorge Gallegos Hernandez and Maria Gabriela Tapia with Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga.
