Paintings and works on paper from the 1980s, a decade of experiment in Whitten’s six-decade career, following his 2025 MoMA retrospective.

After a 1980 house fire, Whitten began handling acrylic as a skin to cut and layer. The show includes his Soulspace paintings and circular reliefs incised with arcs and circles, grids made by pressing wire mesh into wet paint, and Site paintings cast from manhole covers, tire treads and city walls.

More than a dozen Site works on paper and tributes such as Spiral: A Dedication to R. Bearden (1988) are also on view.
