Sep 30, 2026 – Jan 17, 2027 Arts District

The largest group of Ligon’s Coloring Book paintings since their 2000 debut, with a new 22-part Black Panther work.

Ligon made the Coloring Book paintings during a 1999–2000 residency at the Walker Art Center, asking schoolchildren to color pages from Afrocentric coloring books of the late 1960s and early 1970s and then repainting their drawings at large scale. Suns, letters and street scenes mix with portraits of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X.

New is Black Panther Coloring Book #1, 22 parts in black oil stick after a 1969 primer illustrated by Akinsanya Kambon, each image masked so that only captions and traces show.
