Robert CummingSplit-Second Misreads: Robert Cumming and the Fabrication of Illusion

Benton Museum of Art

Feb 20 – Jun 27, 2027 Claremont

Opening soon

One of the largest presentations of Robert Cumming’s work, from early pieces to his Los Angeles photographs, sculpture, slides and videos.

The show centers on the years after Cumming moved to Los Angeles in 1970, when he combined fabrication and illusion. He built sculptural elements from scratch and photographed them in detailed 8x10 prints, staging tricks of perception, and he collected Hollywood continuity photographs and photographed Universal Studios sound stages.

It also includes early student-era works, the rediscovered photo collage Hollywood Front and Back (1971), paintings, mail art, artist books and videos from his archives, with loans and works by other artists. Solveig Nelson organized it, with a catalogue.
