The Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth commissioned the project in 1979, and over the following summers Avedon photographed more than a thousand people, among them ranch hands, miners, waitresses, drifters and carnival workers, at truck stops, rodeos, oil fields, mining camps and slaughterhouses, each against a white backdrop hung outdoors in the shade.

The 110 prints made for the 1985 book are shown with notes, working Polaroids and letters to sitters from the Richard Avedon Foundation. The curator is Clément Chéroux of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson.
