Un Vermeer a Palazzo Barberini. Donna in blu che legge una lettera
Vermeer’s Woman in Blue Reading a Letter, painted around 1663–64, on rare loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
No Italian collection owns a Vermeer, and just over thirty of his paintings are known. The show runs from the Sala Ovale to the Sala Paesaggi, where the painting hangs in a space of its own for close looking.
Digital displays cover Vermeer’s methods, the history of the picture, seventeenth-century Delft and the Rijksmuseum’s 2010 restoration, which removed old varnish and brought back the strength of the blues. The curators are Thomas Clement Salomon and Paola Nicita.
