Portia ZvavaheraLike Flowers We Fade

Zvavahera’s first institutional show in Italy: a site-specific installation and new paintings made after a residency in Rome.

The paintings turn on the death of Zvavahera’s grandmother, which keeps returning to her in dreams, and on ideas of heaven. She builds them in layers of drawing, gestural painting and woodcut printing, using hand-cut stencils and repeated patterns.

A site-specific installation made for the foundation’s rooms completes the show, curated by Alessio Antoniolli. Zvavahera was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1985 and lives there.
