Anselm KieferNymphäum
Apr 25 – Oct 25, 2026
More than 20 new paintings on the nymphs of classical myth, built up from thick paint, collaged canvas, gold leaf and straw.
The title refers to shrines to the nymphs in ancient Greece and Rome. Some paintings set the nymphs in pastoral scenes, others before towering city facades with windows in gold leaf, prompted by light in New York’s Central Park. The largest, Die Oreaden (2025), is almost eight meters wide.
River and sea nymphs appear in Thetis, Nikaia and Actaea; Daphne and Carya show nymphs turned into trees. Kiefer also uses shellac, chalk, charcoal and the green residue of electrolysis, and shows two painted triptych screens.
