David SalleThe Venice Paintings
Paintings made with an AI model trained on Salle’s own work, shown in Venice during this year’s Biennale and reunited here.
Salle fed his Tapestry Paintings (1989–91), based on 18th-century Russian tapestries after Italian paintings, into a model he has been building since 2022. It warps them into all-over abstractions that are printed on canvas; Salle then paints over each, adding courtiers, nudes, knights, teacups and scraps of fashion ads in bright, high-contrast color.
The works were first shown together at the Palazzo Cini Gallery during the 61st Venice Biennale, and hang here in a small room of the Pantin space.
