A small display on Delacroix’s horses, lions and tigers, built around two newly restored studies of stallions.

The museum has acquired two oil studies of stallions, one chestnut and one golden chestnut, and shows them for the first time after restoration. They anchor a display on the animals Delacroix studied and staged in paintings, lithographs and decorative schemes throughout his career.

The show recalls the horses he saw in Morocco in 1832, which fed his images of riders and fantasia scenes. It stresses that such studies were working references, not meant for sale, and so reveals his creative process.
