Sculpture, mobiles and ink and gouache paintings from 1953–54, when Calder came back to live in France for the first time in twenty years.

Calder spent 1953–54 near Aix-en-Provence and in Saché, in the Loire Valley, where he bought a 17th-century stone house called François Premier. On the ground floor, Les Granettes (1953), a large red, white and black standing mobile cut and welded at a local blacksmith’s shop, is shown publicly for the first time since 1954, beneath The Putney Mobile (1954), seen in Europe for the first time.

The floor above holds ink and gouache paintings from the same two years, among them The Black Star (1953) and Portrait de famille (1953).
