Hommage à Jean Fournier

James Bishop, Stéphane Bordarier, Jean Degottex, Sam Francis, Simon Hantaï and others

Abstract paintings from 1955 to 2023 by ten artists shown by the Paris dealer Jean Fournier, gathered around Sam Francis’s Blue Figure.

The show honors Jean Fournier, a leading Paris dealer of abstract painting from 1964 to 2006, whose gallery closed for good in 2024. Oil and acrylic canvases by artists he championed, among them Simon Hantaï, Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Judit Reigl, Jean Degottex, Shirley Jaffe and Riopelle, are gathered around Francis’s Blue Figure (1960), Fournier’s favorite painting.

It comes ahead of the gallery’s eightieth anniversary in January 2027 and runs alongside the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris show of Stéphane Bordarier, Fournier’s last discovery, whom the gallery now represents.
