Hans HofmannMunich, Paris et les voies de l'abstraction

Galerie Dina Vierny, rue Jacob

Oct 14 – Nov 14, 2026 Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Seventeen paintings by Hans Hofmann, from dense 1940s surfaces to his luminous “slab” abstractions of the 1950s and ’60s.

Timed to Art Basel Paris, the show is organized with the American Contemporary Art Gallery and the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust. It brings together seventeen paintings by the German-born Hofmann (1880–1966), who lived among the Paris avant-gardes before settling in the United States and becoming a central figure in postwar American painting.

Trained as a figurative painter, Hofmann turned fully to abstraction in the late 1930s, working through the tension between structure and spontaneity. He later taught in New York and Provincetown, shaping artists from Lee Krasner to Helen Frankenthaler and Frank Stella; a 1963 retrospective at MoMA toured the US and Europe and established his international reputation.
