Solo exhibition
Manuel Álvarez Bravo
A selection of photographs by the Mexican modernist Álvarez Bravo (1902–2002), centered on quiet, solitary scenes of sleepers, dreamers and everyday moments.
Shown alongside Tania Franco Klein’s RAGE™, the selection includes La Buena Fama Durmiendo (Good Reputation Sleeping), El ensueño (The Daydream), in which a young woman is lost in reverie, and Retrato de lo Eterno (Portrait of the Eternal), where deep shadow turns a commonplace moment strange. Self-taught at first, Álvarez Bravo was encouraged by Tina Modotti, and André Breton showed his work in Paris in 1939 and in a Surrealist exhibition in Mexico City in 1940.
