Monumental drawings that rework Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein manuscript into text-based, iridescent works on translucent paper.
Jane Benson’s large drawings on layered translucent paper rework passages of Frankenstein narrated by the monster, reframing them as Mary Shelley’s own voice. Benson copies out selected words by hand, traces only the open "counters" of letters, or removes solfège syllables hidden in the text to uncover a musical score within the prose. Each sheet is mounted on iridescent yellow Plexi, its shade derived from the text itself.
The series treats Shelley’s novel as a feminist and environmental text rather than a horror story, continuing Benson’s long-running practice of dismantling and reassembling found literature, objects and sound.
