Nikki MaloofMenagerie
New paintings of imagined interiors, gardens, a zoo and a restaurant, with fragmented human figures and vivid animals.
Maloof’s new paintings move from private interiors and country landscapes into public places, among them a zoo and a restaurant. The title work grew from a metallic grid pattern that suggested confinement, and the zoo becomes a metaphor for motherhood, joy and containment.
Human figures are partly hidden while animals stay fully visible. Plaid and other patterns recur across scenes such as Lost in a Bramble, Midnight Bouquet, The Restaurant and Abandoned Picnic. Each canvas follows studies projected onto the canvas.
