Takako YamaguchiNew Paintings
New white-on-white trompe l’oeil paintings on brown linen, hand-painted from photographs of plaster bas reliefs.
Each painting starts as a plaster relief made by another artist, which is photographed and then painstakingly translated back into paint. Mounted on a cleat slightly off the wall, the 18-by-24-inch linen works cast shadows and shift between abstraction and representation, setting Minimalism against Photorealism.
The works belong to a sequence now totaling sixty-five paintings, and this is Yamaguchi’s third solo show with the gallery.
