Sáandlaanaay (Kimberly Fulton Orozco)The 7th Time
A walk-in installation that turns the gallery into a lived-in domestic room about the labor of leaving an abusive relationship.
The gallery becomes a familiar kitchen and living room where visitors can sit, make coffee, handle books and listen to tapes. Family photographs, growing plants, children’s drawings and works in progress hold together themes of inheritance, survival and the double nature of home as both violence and comfort.
The piece grows out of The Space We Story, shown in Jeffrey Gibson’s Indigenous Art School at the 2024 Venice Biennale, and draws on Haida regalia-making and kitchen-table knowledge passed between generations.
