An installation of sculptures made from corrugated steel storefront roll-up gates, unrolled and reshaped into abstract and recognizable forms.

Ferney-Cortés takes steel roll-up gates from city storefronts and frees them from their frames, letting the metal unfurl like a scroll. Graffiti, dents, ridges and folds become symbols and topographies in sculptures that are by turns abstract and figurative.

The work considers the barriers that protect and exclude in urban neighborhoods, and asks viewers to reconsider the thresholds they cross daily. The artist is a Colombian-American architect and educator based in New York.
