Artifacts, photographs and art telling the history of the Bowery, New York’s oldest street, from Lenape footpath and skid row to artists’ quarter.

The first exhibition on the history of the museum’s own street mixes archives and artifacts, among them an 1830s hand-pump fire engine, the dime-museum “Feejee Mermaid” and Jacob Riis’s flash-lit pictures from How the Other Half Lives.

Artists who lived or worked on the Bowery, from the Abstract Expressionists to the punks, are represented by Lynda Benglis, Nan Goldin, Eva Hesse, Keith Haring and Cy Twombly, among others. The curator is Lisa Phillips, the museum’s director emerita.
