Paintings and drawings from four decades tracing how jazz, blues and other music shaped Lewis’s art, shown with records from his own collection.

The gallery’s seventh Lewis show runs from the 1942 painting that gives it its name, five musicians nodding to Cab Calloway’s hit Jumpin’ Jive, through calligraphic 1950s drawings and Double Cross (1971), two crosses on a fiery ground recalling Klan burnings, to the wave-like Seachange paintings and the blue-black Ode to Duke (1977).

Selections from Lewis’s collection of nearly 500 records, from Bach to Bob Marley, are on show, and every Saturday afternoon DJ Adrian plays sets drawn from them.
